Nicola “Nicci” Colucy
I believe in Jesus Christ. I accepted him as my personal Savior when I was 5 years old and have lived my life according to the Bible. I’ve attend church weekly with both of my believing parents who have been married for 30+ years. My mother has been on staff at our church for 15 yrs. and the church is my home away from home. This is not to say I am a prude or a fanatic. I have strong family values, discipline and a faith that will come with me in my RA position. I have committed myself to a life of purity. Therefore, joining the EIU campus with its strict policy on the use of illegal substances, security as well as low crime rate and good safety record has been important to me.
I am looked for a college with an emphasis on learning. I wanted to succeed and have fun! Therefore, I wanted to be able to focus on learning and studying while still enjoying a full college experience. I also liked EIU because it to still fairly close to home. My dream is to become a Sports Educator or Health Communicator so that I can teach the health and wellness to children & adults. I also would love to coach, as transferring skills is important to me to equip the next generation. With this, I believe being part of an outstanding Kinesiology and Sports Management Department will help me meet my goals.
I am physically active, involved and will be maintaining a healthy lifestyle at school. I am excited to be the EIU Feature Twirler! I also dance, swim, bowl and enjoy attending exercise classes at the Rec Center. In addition, I am a percussionist in the Eastern Symphonic Band music ensemble.
However, the first and foremost is for me is to be a good steward of my family’s resources while at college. I will need financial help and I need to take advantage of any and all scholarship opportunities in order to attend college. I am a first generation college student with a great respect for my parents who have sacrificed greatly for me to be at EIU. I plan to work hard and contribute to the college community, so finding an on-campus job is equally important for me. I believe I will be able to do this as RA at Pemberton where I will help the growth of new students and the continued growth of existing residents. I do not want to get myself in debt during college.
I believe Eastern Illinois University has been an excellent match for me overall. My transcripts will show that I am a good student, my attendance is above average and a decent GPA my freshman year while doing a variety of extracurricular activities. Balancing a busy schedule is not new to me. I have taken a full load of classes every year at High School and was part of a traveling Jr Olympic competition baton twirling team, with hours and hours of private lessons for baton twirling and dance, as well as being an active member of a Thespian troupe in my high school career. I had 21.0 credits my senior year and I attend an off-campus course to become a certified nursing assistant. This class earned me 3.0 high school credits along with my other classes I earned 7 more credits that year for a total of 28 at graduation. In addition, the C.N.A. course earned me 9 college credits with Joliet Junior College. In addition I became a certified lifeguard and CPR certified during that time also.
My personal story is one that often interests people. I was diagnosed at the age of 2-1/2 with a central auditory processing disorder and I was not expected to attend a regular classroom or have success at academics. I certainly wasn’t expected to do many of the things I have mentioned. I have worked hard and I have learned how to cope with this disorder. As you can see I have many successes in the classroom and beyond. I would ask for your consideration when reviewing my application for Resident Assistant to consider the obstacle I have overcome, the perseverance and dedication that it has required to be a musician, a Junior Olympic gold medalist, a Thespian, a dancer as well as an excellent student and expect the same dedication, insistence and determination to be the best RA possible next fall.
I hope this academic statement has helped you understand me and my goals as a student at EIU.
