6 March 2013 A Photographic Moment in Community Service One of the most personal and touching community service projects that I have ever had the opportunity to work on was this past summer when I helped with publicity and performed at the “MATTER OF GRACE”, Amazing Grace Foundation Benefit Dance Concert. It was held at the Bolingbrook Performing Arts Center on April 12th. My friend, Grace Kopasz, 17, suffers every day from migraines. She has a debilitating condition call “Chronic Daily Migraine Syndrome”. I love her. She is amazing. It was a very emotional performance for me. I did a dance twirl to the song “HOME” by Phillip Phillips. I made copies of the flyers and helped pass them out to local businesses for several days prior to the concert. It was a great opportunity to tell people about Grace and the hardship her family has had looking for a cure for her. Working with other teens who love Grace and her family was exciting, but the most significant portion of the service project for me happened on the day of the event. Seeing everyone come out to watch the concert, to donate, and to then to see the check for $2000 presented to her family. Her Dad was so overwhelmed with appreciation he could hardly speak. God did so many things that day for me. He helped me realize that twirling for the football games was not the only thing I could do with my sport. I can use this to help people. Later in the summer, I again was able to twirl fire batons at the Appreciation Picnic for the Bolingbrook Christian Health Center. Previously, I thought these opportunities were just volunteering, but honestly, they have become service learning projects in my heart. Thanks Amazing Grace Foundation for allowing me to perform for Grace and her family |
